Basic Study on Reproducibility of Phase Spectra of Skin Vibrations among Exploration of Textures
Abstract
We investigated the reproducibility of phase spectra in skin vibrations generated during tactile exploration of textured surfaces under controlled conditions. Skin vibrations were recorded from a participant exploring 22 textures each for three trials, and the phase spectra were computed from the Fourier transform of the vibration signals. While some textures exhibited reproducible phase patterns across trials, others showed little or no consistency. Textures that showed similar patterns of phase-spectrum reproducibility tended to share similar structural characteristics. These findings suggest that the phase spectra of skin vibrations may encode texture-dependent structural information, indicating that phase-based features could provide complementary cues to amplitude in tactile texture representation.
